Burlington, Vt. – Farmers and gardeners across the Adirondacks and northern Vermont will want to cover sensitive plants tonight as a freeze warning takes effect in the region. Temperatures are expected to plummet into the mid-20s by early Saturday morning, posing a threat to late-season crops and unprotected outdoor plumbing.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, the warning is in place from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. Saturday for southern Franklin and western Clinton counties in New York, along with Essex County, Vermont. A separate freeze warning from the Albany office covers Hamilton County, where lows will hover in the upper 20s to lower 30s.

Communities including Saranac Lake, Tupper Lake, Ellenburg, Long Lake, and Island Pond could wake to frost-covered ground. Residents are urged to bring in potted plants, cover gardens, and insulate outdoor spigots to prevent pipe damage.

The early-season chill marks one of the coldest nights so far this September and signals a seasonal shift across the North Country. More advisories are possible if below-freezing conditions persist into next week.
