Burlington, VT – Scattered severe thunderstorms could bring damaging wind gusts, frequent lightning, and even a brief tornado to northeastern New York and northern Vermont between 3 and 8 p.m. Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, a Level 2 out of 5 severe storm risk has been issued for areas including St. Albans, Montpelier, Barre, and Plattsburgh. The primary concern is strong, scattered wind gusts capable of downing trees and power lines. Storms may develop rapidly during the late afternoon hours.

Communities in Franklin, Orleans, and Lamoille counties should prepare for fast-moving cells that could disrupt travel on I-89 and Route 7 during the evening commute. Burlington and St. Johnsbury could also see brief heavy downpours and lightning strikes.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, charge devices in advance, and monitor local alerts. While the tornado threat is low, the National Weather Service warns that a brief and weak spin-up can’t be ruled out.

The risk is expected to diminish after 8 p.m., but additional alerts may be issued if conditions worsen. Stay weather-aware through tonight.
