Buffalo, N.Y. – Damaging thunderstorms are sweeping through western New York early Friday, packing 60 mph winds, quarter-size hail, and torrential rain that could trigger flash flooding across the Buffalo metro area.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a Severe Thunderstorm Warning remains in effect until 6:15 a.m. for Erie, Niagara, Genesee, Orleans, and Wyoming counties. Radar indicated storms tracking northeast at 35 mph, currently impacting areas from Fort Niagara State Park to Derby, with more damage likely as the line moves inland.
Residents in Akron, Clarence Center, Depew, and Eden should expect strong gusts capable of downing trees and power lines. Interstate 90 travelers between exits 48A and 57 are urged to use caution, as wind and reduced visibility from heavy rain may create dangerous driving conditions.
The storm is producing frequent cloud-to-ground lightning and rainfall intense enough to cause localized flash flooding. Emergency officials warn against driving through standing water and advise staying indoors in an interior room away from windows.
Warnings remain active until at least 6:15 a.m., and additional alerts may follow if storms persist or intensify.
