Binghamton, NY – Damaging wind gusts and heavy rain could sweep across Central and Southern Tier New York from 1 to 10 p.m. Thursday as a line of thunderstorms develops and moves eastward. Localized power outages, flash flooding, and dangerous travel conditions are possible, especially during the late afternoon commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, there’s a 5–14% risk of severe wind gusts topping 58 mph within 25 miles of any point in the region, with some areas seeing gusts between 30–40 mph. Rain is expected to begin early Thursday afternoon, with storms becoming more organized by evening. A marginal risk for severe thunderstorms has been issued for much of the region, including Broome, Chemung, Tompkins, Cortland, and Otsego counties.
Flash flooding is not widespread but may occur in low-lying or poor-drainage areas during intense downpours. Drivers should avoid flooded roadways and keep emergency supplies ready in case of downed trees or brief outages. Cloud-to-ground lightning will also be a threat in isolated areas, especially during peak storm hours.
Storm activity should taper late Thursday night, but lingering showers may continue into early Friday. Stay alert for updated advisories as the system develops.
