Binghamton, NY – New Yorkers should enjoy the dry skies while they last — isolated to scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop late this afternoon and continue through the evening, with locally heavy rain likely across the Finger Lakes and I-81 corridor.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, rain chances increase from west to east starting around 4 p.m., with the highest potential for storms west of I-81. Areas like Ithaca, Elmira, and Corning could see downpours strong enough to cause localized flash flooding overnight.
Temperatures will reach the mid to upper 80s across much of Central and Southern New York, with Syracuse nearing 90°F. The humid air will help fuel these pop-up storms, especially in regions near the NY Thruway and Southern Tier Expressway.
Drivers should be alert for reduced visibility and ponding on roads after sunset. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items and charge electronic devices in case of power disruptions.
While Sunday will start wet in some areas, the storms are expected to taper off by midday. Additional advisories may be issued if flash flooding becomes more widespread.
