Albany, N.Y. – Showers and thunderstorms could drench Albany and surrounding Capital Region cities by midafternoon Sunday, July 20th, bringing the first summer weather alert of the week.

According to the National Weather Service, rain chances spike to 70% after 2 p.m. Sunday, with brief downpours and isolated thunderstorms possible. Some storms may bring gusty winds along I-87 and Route 9, especially between Albany, Rensselaer, and East Greenbush. Temperatures will still climb near 86°F despite the unsettled skies.

Residents should avoid outdoor plans during the storm window and secure loose items. Minor street flooding and reduced visibility could impact drivers in low-lying or poorly drained areas. Rainfall totals may exceed a quarter inch in thunderstorms.

Conditions clear out Sunday night, setting up a stretch of calmer weather. Monday and Tuesday will be sunny and seasonal, with highs near 80°F. Tuesday night dips cooler, with a low around 58°F under mostly clear skies.

By Wednesday, the heat returns, with highs soaring into the upper 80s and low 90s through Thursday. Humid air could bring more afternoon storms by the end of the week, though chances remain lower than Sunday’s.
