Albany, New York – Eastern New York is baking under extreme heat Tuesday, with heat index values reaching a sweltering 107°F in parts of the Capital Region.

According to the National Weather Service in Albany, an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect until 8 p.m. Tuesday for much of eastern New York, including Albany, Troy, Schenectady, Saratoga Springs, Hudson, and surrounding areas. Daytime highs near 98°F, paired with high humidity, are making conditions especially dangerous for those without air conditioning.

The warning covers areas along Route 9, where pavement temperatures may exceed 120°F. Residents should stay indoors, hydrate often, and avoid outdoor work during peak heat hours. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends frequent breaks in shade or cool spaces for anyone working outside.

By Wednesday, relief inches closer. Isolated storms and showers move in by the afternoon, dropping temperatures slightly to a high around 91°F, though humidity remains. Scattered thunderstorms are also likely through Wednesday night, offering temporary cooling but adding potential for lightning and downpours.

Thursday and Friday trend cooler, with highs in the mid-70s and increased rain chances that could disrupt travel or outdoor plans. Heat illnesses may still be a concern until nighttime lows return to the 60s.

More heat warnings could be issued if humidity spikes again. Stay updated with local advisories and prepare for possible power grid stress and health emergencies through the week.
