Buffalo, N.Y. – Thunderstorms and sweltering heat are set to dominate much of New York this week, with temperatures climbing into the upper 80s and daily rain chances peaking midweek.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo and Binghamton, showers will begin late Monday, June 16, and continue with multiple rounds of thunderstorms through Thursday. The highest storm risk is Thursday, when strong storms could develop across central and western New York. Rain chances remain elevated through at least Saturday, with cooler air briefly moving in before a heat surge Sunday into early next week.

Cities like Rochester, Syracuse, and Olean could see highs between 86–89°F by the weekend, paired with increasing humidity. Buffalo, Jamestown, and Watertown may stay slightly cooler but still humid, with highs in the low 80s. Overnight lows remain in the 60s, offering limited relief.

Residents should prepare for flash flooding in low-lying areas and monitor power needs, especially during strong storms. Charge devices in advance and avoid driving during downpours. Those without air conditioning should plan for heat safety as temperatures trend well above normal by Sunday.

Above-normal heat is expected to linger into the week of June 24, with more alerts possible if conditions worsen.
