Binghamton, New York – Lingering smoky haze continues to blanket much of Central New York today, keeping skies hazy and limiting visibility for morning commuters and outdoor plans. According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, conditions will gradually improve later today as smoke drifts north, with air quality expected to rebound heading into Sunday.
Temperatures across the region will climb into the low to mid-80s today, while humidity remains moderate. Towns including Ithaca, Norwich, and Oneonta can expect limited sunshine filtered by the remaining haze. While the risk for thunderstorms is low, a stray storm could pop up in Tug Hill or the Catskills this afternoon. The New York Department of Environmental Conservation urges residents with respiratory concerns to limit strenuous activity outdoors until conditions clear.
Saturday brings continued dry weather and slow clearing, but haze and reduced air quality may persist through most of the day. By Sunday, much of the smoke should dissipate, allowing for the warmest afternoon of the weekend, with highs near 90 in Binghamton and upper 80s from Elmira to Cortland. Those with weekend outdoor plans should check updated air quality alerts and stay hydrated as humidity builds.
Improvement is expected through Sunday evening, but NWS officials caution that localized smoke could return if winds shift. Updates and advisories will be issued as needed.
