New York, NY –Thunderstorms could sweep across New York City by 2 p.m. Saturday, threatening outdoor plans and bringing ponding to key roads like FDR Drive. The National Weather Service warns of strong showers and isolated thunderstorms likely to hit just as weekend activities kick off.

According to the NWS, rain chances rise sharply Saturday afternoon with gusts up to 14 mph and totals between one-tenth and one-quarter of an inch. Saturday night will bring heavier rain after 8 p.m., with up to half an inch of rainfall and thunder possible. The wet weather extends through Monday, increasing the chance of street flooding in low-lying areas and slowing weekend travel.

Neighborhoods from Central Park to the Bronx could see localized flooding, especially near poorly drained intersections and subway entrances. Pedestrians and cyclists should prepare for slick paths and low visibility. Drivers are urged to reduce speed and avoid puddled lanes on roads like the West Side Highway and FDR.

Sunday brings no major relief. Scattered storms return after 2 p.m., possibly with thunder. Highs will fall to the upper 60s, and nighttime showers continue into early Monday.

The week ahead stays unsettled:

  • Monday: Rain persists with highs around 62°F.
  • Tuesday: More rain likely, but warmer near 67°F.
  • Wednesday: Finally drying out, with only a 30% chance of showers.
