BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – Fog drifts low across the Susquehanna Valley this Monday morning, headlights cutting through the damp air as fall’s next shift looms. The region’s warm, wet start to the week will give way to a cooler, breezier stretch by midweek, marking a steady slide toward the season’s first frost potential.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, showers will persist through Monday as moist southwest winds push across Broome and Tioga counties. Visibility may drop below a quarter-mile early, especially on I-81 and Route 17, making the morning commute slow and slick. Rain amounts remain light, but gusty winds could reach 20 mph at times.

By Tuesday, conditions briefly dry out with partial sunshine and highs in the mid-60s. However, a weak cold front follows quickly, bringing scattered showers Tuesday night and a noticeable chill by Wednesday. Afternoon highs fall back to the 50s, with cooler, clearer air moving in behind the system. The bigger story arrives Thursday night into Friday morning, when temperatures dip into the 30s across the Southern Tier and Catskills — cold enough to spark patchy frost in rural valleys.

Residents should plan to protect garden plants, check heating systems, and keep an eye on any outdoor plans later this week. After all, Halloween’s just around the corner — and this cool snap may be the first true sign that winter’s not far behind.

Skies turn partly sunny again by Friday, with a crisp, bright weekend expected for leaf-peepers and fall events.
