Buffalo, NY – Lake effect snow continues to create hazardous travel conditions across western New York, with snowfall rates reaching up to 3 inches per hour at times on Friday morning. Drivers in northern Erie and Genesee counties are advised to remain cautious as a lake effect snow warning remains in effect until 1 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service, the snow band off Lake Erie has weakened overnight, with snowfall rates now generally under 1 inch per hour. However, brief bursts of heavier snow could still occur, particularly east of Lake Ontario. These conditions may result in reduced visibility and slick roads during the morning commute. Major roadways, including I-90 and local routes near Buffalo, could be impacted by snow accumulation and icy conditions.

Friday afternoon will see the snow taper off as temperatures remain cold, with highs near 25 degrees. Saturday offers a brief respite, with sunny skies and a high of 32 degrees. By Sunday, however, a mix of rain and snow showers is expected in the morning, transitioning to rain by the afternoon as temperatures climb to 40 degrees. Rain will continue into Monday, bringing warmer highs near 47 degrees, before cooling slightly midweek with scattered showers.

Residents should plan ahead for changing weather and road conditions throughout the weekend. Drivers are urged to reduce speeds, leave extra space between vehicles, and allow extra travel time during snow events. Be prepared for potentially icy conditions to persist even after the snow clears.
