Binghamton, NY – The air feels sharper this morning, the kind that signals change on the horizon. A cold gray sky hangs low over the hills of Broome County, and meteorologists say it’s only the beginning — a winter storm is tracking toward central New York and could drop several inches of snow by Tuesday.

The National Weather Service in Binghamton reports that a developing system will arrive late Monday night, bringing widespread snow through Tuesday morning. Early estimates suggest 3 to 6 inches of accumulation, with locally higher totals possible across higher terrain and rural valleys. Travel could become hazardous by the Tuesday morning commute, especially along I-81, Route 17, and Route 88.

Temperatures are expected to hover near freezing as the snow begins, raising the risk for slushy, slick pavement and reduced visibility. Gusty winds will add to the challenge for drivers, creating occasional blowing snow in open areas. Residents are urged to plan ahead, clear vehicles early, and delay travel if possible.

Meteorologists describe this as the first true winter system of the season for central New York, marking an early start to December’s snow pattern.

Five-Day Outlook:

  • Monday: Mostly cloudy, high 39°F.
  • Monday Night: Snow developing, low 21°F.
  • Tuesday: Heavy snow likely, high 36°F.
  • Wednesday: Partly sunny, high 36°F.
  • Thursday: Snow showers likely, high 36°F.
