Lockport, NY – The Niagara County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents to take precautions against holiday package thefts, which tend to spike during November and December as online deliveries increase.
Officials say that in 2024, an estimated 58 million packages were stolen nationwide, representing $12 billion in losses. With the 2025 holiday season underway, the sheriff’s office is encouraging residents to follow safety tips to avoid becoming a victim of so-called “porch pirates.”
Recommended steps include:
- Having packages delivered to a workplace or secure location
- Requesting a delivery signature
- Using Amazon Hub Lockers or carrier pickup points
- Signing up for shipping alerts
- Installing doorbell or Wi-Fi-enabled cameras
Residents who notice suspicious activity or package thefts are urged to contact the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office at (716) 438-3393.
“Don’t let the delivery Grinch ruin your holidays,” the department said in a statement, reminding neighbors to stay alert and look out for one another.
