New York, NY – Severe thunderstorms could pound the Tri-State area Thursday afternoon, bringing damaging winds, large hail, and a chance for isolated tornadoes from New York City westward.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, the most severe storms are likely between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. Thursday, June 19. Areas in and around New York City, Paterson, Newark, and Elizabeth are under an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5) for severe storms, with high confidence in damaging wind gusts over 60 mph and the possibility of large hail.

Parts of northeastern New Jersey and lower Hudson Valley could experience sudden downpours that lead to localized flooding on major roads like I-95, Route 17, and the Garden State Parkway. Flights at LaGuardia, JFK, and Newark Liberty may see delays. The storm threat tapers eastward, with Long Island and southern Connecticut at lower risk but still facing thunderstorm activity.

Residents are urged to charge devices, secure outdoor furniture, and have multiple ways to receive warnings, including NOAA Weather Radio and smartphone alerts. Tornadoes aren’t likely, but the NWS warns they cannot be ruled out.

Storm activity is expected to move out overnight, but additional alerts could be issued if storm cells redevelop.
