Albany, NY – Severe thunderstorms are expected to hit New York this afternoon, bringing the possibility of damaging winds, heavy rainfall, and even a few tornadoes. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a flood watch for areas including the southern Adirondacks, Mohawk Valley, and eastern Catskills, as the storm system moves across the region.

According to the NWS, rainfall rates could reach up to 1 inch per hour, particularly in the Capital District, increasing the likelihood of flash flooding and rapid river rises. The heaviest rain is expected to arrive late this afternoon and continue into the evening before tapering off around midnight.

In addition to the flood threat, there is a significant risk of severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds and isolated tornadoes. Residents are urged to stay informed and take precautions, especially if they live in flood-prone areas.

Looking ahead, the weather is expected to improve on Saturday, with sunny skies and a high of 83°F. The dry conditions will continue into Sunday, with partly cloudy skies and a high of 79°F. Temperatures will remain mild early next week, with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s, providing a brief respite after the severe weather.
