New York, NY – A line of powerful thunderstorms is racing across the New York metro area this Friday afternoon, bringing a serious risk of damaging winds, torrential rain, and hail to millions through 9 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is now in effect for New York City, Long Island, and the Hudson Valley—including the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, Staten Island, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Dutchess, and more. The primary threats are 60 mph wind gusts, isolated hail up to quarter size, flash flooding on low-lying roads, and scattered power outages.

In the city, expect sudden downpours, blinding lightning, and rapid street flooding—especially along FDR Drive, the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, and major arteries in Nassau and Suffolk. Outdoor activities and events should be postponed. If driving, keep headlights on and watch for debris or fallen trees, especially on the Hutchinson River Parkway, I-87, and Route 17 in Orange County. Charge phones and prepare for possible outages; avoid flooded underpasses.

Storms could linger into the evening, with additional warnings possible if conditions worsen. Stay alert for fast-changing weather and check local alerts frequently. The Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 9 p.m.
