Albany, N.Y. – Damaging wind gusts and isolated large hail are possible across much of upstate New York through 8 p.m. Saturday as a severe thunderstorm watch blankets over 30 counties.
According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, Severe Thunderstorm Watch 277 includes key regions from Albany to Rochester, north to the Adirondacks and west toward the Finger Lakes. The watch was issued at 12:35 p.m. EDT and will remain in effect until 8 p.m., warning of storms capable of producing 60 mph winds, frequent lightning, and hail up to one inch in diameter.
Cities under the watch include Syracuse, Schenectady, Binghamton, and Watertown. Rural counties such as St. Lawrence, Hamilton, and Essex may also experience rapid storm development. Local emergency managers urge residents to secure outdoor items, avoid tall trees, and monitor for updated warnings via NOAA Weather Radio or mobile alerts.
Power outages and hazardous travel conditions are possible, especially along I-90 and secondary roadways where downed limbs and debris may obstruct traffic.
Storm activity is expected to taper off by late evening, but additional watches or warnings may be issued if conditions intensify. Stay weather-aware and prepare to take shelter as needed.
