New York, NY – Strong thunderstorms are expected to sweep through the New York City metro area and surrounding counties this afternoon and evening, with damaging winds and large hail possible until 9 p.m. Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is now in effect for all five New York City boroughs—Bronx, Brooklyn (Kings), Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island (Richmond)—as well as Nassau, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, and Westchester counties. The watch runs through 9 p.m., and officials warn that storms could produce wind gusts up to 60 mph, hail, torrential rain, and brief power outages.

Drivers along I-87, the Bronx River Parkway, and major Long Island routes should expect sudden heavy downpours and reduced visibility during the evening commute. Outdoor activities in Central Park, Jones Beach, and local parks may be disrupted by fast-moving storms. Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, charge mobile devices, and avoid flooded roads.

This is the first widespread severe weather threat for the area in July, with storms tracking in from Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Officials recommend staying indoors during thunder and monitoring alerts from the NYC Emergency Management and local media.

Severe weather is expected to taper off after 9 p.m., but more alerts could be issued if storms linger.
