Syracuse, NY – Drivers across large portions of central New York and northeast Pennsylvania are being urged to use caution as snow and mixed winter precipitation continue to impact the region, creating slick roads during a busy holiday travel period.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect across multiple counties Tuesday, with some areas seeing impacts extend into Wednesday morning. Snow totals generally range from 1 to 5 inches, with a light glaze of ice possible, especially in higher elevations.
Advisories lasting until 7 a.m. Wednesday cover Onondaga, Madison, Southern Cayuga, Southern Oneida, and Northern Oneida counties, including Syracuse, Utica, Rome, Auburn, Hamilton, and Boonville. These areas could see 2 to 6 inches of snow, with the higher totals focused on elevated terrain. Lower elevations in the Mohawk Valley and Syracuse metro are expected to see lighter amounts closer to 1 to 3 inches.
Elsewhere, advisories are set to expire by 4 p.m. Tuesday across much of the Southern Tier and Catskills, including Binghamton, Ithaca, Elmira, Oneonta, Monticello, Cortland, Norwich, and Watkins Glen, as well as parts of northeast Pennsylvania, including Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, Hazleton, Towanda, and Milford. Snow totals in these areas are forecast between 1 and 4 inches, with localized higher amounts at elevation.
In Steuben County, including Corning and Hornell, the advisory remains in effect until 4 p.m., with 1 to 3 inches of snow expected.
The hazardous conditions could impact both the Tuesday morning and evening commutes, particularly on untreated roads, bridges, and higher terrain. Motorists are advised to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra travel time.
