Binghamton, New York – A mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain will create slick roads across parts of central New York and northeast Pennsylvania beginning at 5 a.m. Friday, directly impacting the morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 5 a.m. to noon EST Friday. Snow and sleet totals will reach up to 1 inch, with ice accumulations around 0.10 inches. The highest ice amounts are expected on hilltops, while lower elevations may see lighter glazing.
Bridges and overpasses will ice first.
Interstates 81, 88, and 84, along with Route 17 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Northeast Extension near Scranton and Wilkes-Barre, could see slippery conditions before sunrise. Communities including Binghamton, Cortland, Oneida, Towanda, Scranton, and Hazleton are in the advisory area.
Even a light glaze can cause spinouts.
Drivers should slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and check 511NY or 511PA for updated road conditions before heading out. PennDOT urges motorists to adjust speeds based on roadway conditions.
Precipitation will taper by midday, but untreated surfaces may remain slick into early afternoon. The Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until noon EST Friday.
