Binghamton, NY – A biting wind cuts across the Southern Tier this morning as early flurries dance in the cold November air. The calm start won’t last long — forecasters warn of fast-moving snow squalls developing this afternoon, capable of dropping a quick inch or two of snow and cutting visibility to near zero for drivers.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, bursts of snow may form suddenly, especially along I-81 and Route 17 between mid-afternoon and early evening. These squalls will combine gusty winds up to 30 mph with falling snow, creating dangerous “whiteout” conditions that can catch travelers off guard. Those returning from post-Thanksgiving trips are urged to slow down and allow extra time on slippery roads.

Temperatures will remain below freezing through much of the day, holding near 27°F before a gradual climb into the mid-30s Saturday. Sunshine returns briefly to start the weekend, but another round of light snow or rain–snow mix may arrive Sunday as a weak front moves east.

By early next week, colder air returns behind that system, setting up a true early December chill. Lows will dip back into the 20s with highs struggling to reach the mid-30s. While no major storms are expected, early signs point to a broader cold pattern building from the Midwest into the Northeast through the first week of December — a classic winter tease for upstate residents.
