New York – The cold feels sharper this morning, and the air carries a warning. Breath hangs longer, metal stings faster, and the next wave of winter tightens its grip as brutal cold lines up for the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, an Extreme Cold Watch is in effect from late Friday night through Sunday afternoon for central New York and northeast Pennsylvania. Wind chills could drop to 20 to 30 degrees below zero, cold enough to cause frostbite in as little as 30 minutes.

Binghamton and surrounding communities, including Vestal, Endicott, and Johnson City, will see snow chances increase Friday, mainly later in the day. Highs hover near the upper 20s before temperatures fall sharply Friday night. Northwest winds strengthen, setting the stage for rapidly worsening wind chills by Saturday morning.

Saturday stays mostly cloudy and bitter. Highs struggle near 5 degrees, while blowing snow and lingering flurries reduce visibility at times. Roads that briefly thaw Friday may refreeze quickly, creating slick travel conditions across Broome County and along Route 17 and I-81. Saturday night turns even colder, with lows near 6 below zero.

Sunday remains locked in the deep freeze. Highs barely reach the low teens, and wind chills stay below zero through the afternoon. Limit time outdoors, dress in layers, and keep pets inside. Check on vulnerable neighbors and protect exposed pipes.

Looking ahead, relief appears possible early next week. NOAA’s 6–10 day outlook points to a warming trend with above-normal temperatures expanding east, hinting at a slow thaw after this Arctic surge.
