New York wakes up to a glaze threat as light snow and freezing rain brush across the Southern Tier this morning. In Binghamton, temperatures hover at 32 degrees with a wind chill near 24. Wet pavement and untreated bridges could turn slick through late morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until noon for Broome County and surrounding areas, including parts of northeast Pennsylvania. Mixed precipitation may produce up to 1 inch of snow and around one-tenth of an inch of ice, mainly on hilltops. Even light icing can create hazardous road conditions.
Expect slick spots on I-81, Route 17/I-86, and secondary roads.
Periods of rain and snow continue into the afternoon, with a 50 percent chance of precipitation and highs near 42 degrees. Southeast winds may gust to 22 mph. While little additional snow accumulation is expected after midday, melting followed by refreezing becomes a concern by evening as temperatures slip back toward freezing.
That’s when flash freezing can catch drivers off guard.
Saturday stays mostly cloudy with scattered rain or snow showers and a high near 40. Sunday turns colder, with highs near 37 and another chance of light precipitation. Any lingering moisture could refreeze early Monday as lows dip into the 20s.
Plan extra time if traveling through noon. Slow down on bridges and shaded roads.
Early next week trends colder, with highs in the 30s through Tuesday before moderating midweek. Longer-range signals favor above-normal temperatures heading into late February, hinting at early spring warmth by next weekend.
