New York – Gray clouds hang low over the Southern Tier this morning, and the air feels sharp and cold. Roads across Broome County remain dry for now, but weather conditions will change quickly before St. Patrick’s Day arrives.

Temperatures sit near 25°F in Binghamton early today, with overcast skies and wind chills near 15°F. Light snow showers could drift through the region during the morning hours. Some spots may pick up around an inch or less, mainly on grassy areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, the bigger shift arrives Monday afternoon. A surge of warm air pushes temperatures to around 63°F, creating a brief taste of spring across central New York and nearby northeast Pennsylvania.

That warmth fuels scattered showers and possible thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Monday. Some storms may become strong. Damaging wind gusts and heavy rainfall are the main threats. Meteorologists say a brief isolated tornado cannot be ruled out across the region.

Drivers along Interstate 81, Route 17, and Route 201 should plan extra travel time Monday afternoon and evening. Heavy downpours could reduce visibility and create standing water on highways.

Colder air rushes in Monday night. Rain continues before changing to snow showers after midnight into early Tuesday. Slushy coatings are possible on colder surfaces, especially bridges and rural roads.

Tuesday stays cold with highs near 29°F and scattered snow showers. Gusty winds could create biting wind chills through the afternoon.

Conditions begin improving midweek as skies clear and temperatures slowly rebound. By Thursday, highs climb back toward the mid-40s, offering a small hint that spring is trying to return.

Meteorologists are closely monitoring Monday’s storm potential as the system approaches the Northeast.
