Binghamton, New York – Freezing rain is expected to create hazardous travel conditions across portions of central New York and northeast Pennsylvania from Sunday afternoon into early Monday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, Winter Weather Advisories are in effect from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday through 4 to 7 a.m. EST Monday, depending on location. Affected areas include Steuben, Schuyler, Chemung, Tompkins, Cortland, Chenango, Broome, Delaware, Sullivan, Otsego, Tioga, and Oneida counties in New York, along with Bradford, Susquehanna, Wyoming, Lackawanna, Luzerne, and Pike counties in Pennsylvania.

Forecasters expect freezing rain to develop Sunday afternoon and evening, with ice accumulations generally around one-tenth of an inch, increasing to up to one-quarter inch in parts of Madison and Oneida counties. The icing is expected to make roads slick, particularly on untreated surfaces, bridges, and higher terrain.

The National Weather Service warns that difficult travel conditions are possible, with impacts likely during the Monday morning commute. Ice accumulation on trees and power lines could also lead to isolated power outages, especially in areas receiving heavier icing.

In addition, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Monday evening through Wednesday morning for Madison and Oneida counties, where lake-effect snow accumulations near one foot are possible, along with wind gusts up to 45 mph later in the week.

Residents are urged to slow down while driving, allow extra travel time, and prepare for possible power disruptions. Road conditions can be checked by calling 511. Officials recommend monitoring forecast updates as conditions evolve.
