Wet pavement and gray skies are settling across New York’s Southern Tier this morning as showers spread toward Binghamton, creating slick travel on I-81, Route 17, and neighborhood roads. Drivers may notice brief bursts of heavier rain through the late morning and afternoon as scattered thunderstorms pass through the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected through late afternoon with rainfall totals between 0.10 and 0.25 inches, though localized pockets could produce higher amounts. South winds increase to around 11 mph, with gusts reaching 23 mph, pushing warm, springlike air into central New York.
Temperatures climb near 72°F, an unusually mild reading for early March across Broome and Tioga counties. However, conditions will not stay this warm for long. Cooler air begins sliding into the region soon after the rain tapers later today.
Temperatures drop sharply into the low 30s by early Thursday, setting the stage for a dramatic weather shift across the Southern Tier. Meteorologists are also watching a colder system arriving Friday that could mix rain with wet snow showers during the afternoon.
That transition may briefly affect travel along Interstate 81, Route 17, and Route 11, especially where temperatures hover close to freezing. Slushy bursts are possible in heavier showers, although significant accumulation is not expected.
Saturday should bring a welcome break with brighter skies and calmer weather across Binghamton and surrounding communities. Still, winter is not done yet. Light snow showers may return again Saturday night before a milder system brings rain early next week.
Spring warmth will gradually build again toward late next week across the Northeast as the first day of spring approaches on March 20.
