Binghamton, NY – The calm start to December won’t last. A powerful winter storm system is set to blanket portions of Central New York and Northeast Pennsylvania with up to 7 inches of snow beginning late Monday night and continuing through Tuesday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from 1 a.m. Tuesday until 10 p.m. Tuesday, covering Broome, Chenango, Delaware, Otsego, Sullivan, and Tioga Counties. Snow will begin around daybreak and intensify quickly through the morning commute, reducing visibility to under a half mile at times. Travel on I-81, I-88, and Route 17 could become dangerous as heavy snow and slick conditions develop through midday.
Forecasters warn that travel may be very difficult, especially during the morning and evening commutes. Winds from the southeast at 5 to 10 mph could cause light drifting, while temperatures near 30°F will keep snow heavy and wet. As the system moves out Tuesday night, roads could refreeze under clearing skies and falling temperatures.
By Wednesday, sunshine returns with highs near 36°F, but the break is brief — another chance for snow showers arrives Thursday into early Friday as Arctic air dips south. Expect wind chills in the teens by week’s end, a sharp reminder that winter has fully arrived across upstate New York.
