New York, NY – After a stretch of bone-chilling cold, New York City will finally begin thawing this weekend, with daytime temperatures rising into the low 30s by Sunday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service, Saturday will remain cold with a high near 22°F and a low in the mid-teens. But a noticeable shift arrives Sunday, when New York breaks its weeklong freeze streak as highs climb to around 30°F under partly sunny skies. Overnight lows will also rise, providing brief relief for city shelters and emergency responders.

Central Park hasn’t recorded a temperature above freezing since last Friday, marking nearly nine consecutive days of subfreezing highs. If the trend holds through Saturday, it would be the city’s longest cold snap since 1961.

While the weekend brings improved conditions for walking, commuting, and outdoor work, icy sidewalks and shaded roads remain a concern during morning hours. Officials advise caution and continued winter precautions, especially overnight.

Another round of colder air could arrive by midweek. For now, residents are encouraged to take advantage of the weekend’s modest warm-up before more Arctic air potentially returns.
