New York, NY – New Yorkers are facing one of the coldest stretches in recent years, with subfreezing temperatures gripping the city through at least Friday and wind chills hovering near zero.

According to the National Weather Service, Central Park has remained below 32°F since Friday night, and high temperatures aren’t expected to climb above freezing until Sunday. Tuesday through Thursday will bring daytime highs in the upper teens to near 20°F, with overnight lows between 8°F and 11°F. Wind chills will make it feel significantly colder, especially in the early mornings and late evenings.

City agencies are warning of frostbite and hypothermia risks for vulnerable populations. The Department of Homeless Services has issued a Code Blue alert, activating emergency shelters and outreach teams citywide. Sidewalks, overpasses, and outdoor workspaces may become dangerous without proper cold-weather gear.

Residents are urged to bundle up in multiple layers, wear hats and gloves, and limit time outside. Those relying on space heaters or alternate heat sources are reminded to follow fire safety protocols.

While skies remain mostly clear, the extreme cold poses a greater threat than snow this week. Conditions will gradually ease starting Saturday, but frigid nights continue through early next week.
