New York, New York – A light glaze of ice is already forming north and west of the city, and untreated roads along I-87 and I-684 could turn slick through 11 p.m. Tuesday as freezing rain continues.
According to the National Weather Service in New York, freezing rain will persist this evening across interior portions of the Lower Hudson Valley and southern Connecticut, while coastal areas see mostly plain rain. Ice accumulations between 0.05 and 0.10 inches are possible in colder inland locations, enough to create hazardous travel and coat elevated surfaces.
The greatest concern centers on roadways north of I-95, including stretches of I-84, the Hutchinson River Parkway and the Saw Mill River Parkway. Even minor ice buildup can cause vehicles to slide on untreated bridges and overpasses. Areas such as White Plains, Danbury and Waterbury may experience the slickest conditions during the late evening hours.
Within New York City, surface temperatures remain marginal, limiting significant icing, but drivers heading north into Westchester or Putnam counties should prepare for rapidly changing conditions. Extra caution is advised on secondary roads and shaded areas where temperatures hover at or below freezing.
Motorists should reduce speed, increase following distance and avoid sudden braking. Sidewalks and parking lots may also become slippery.
Freezing rain is expected to taper later tonight as temperatures gradually rise. Additional advisories could be issued if icing becomes more widespread before precipitation ends.
