New York, New York – Saturday — House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries called for immediate congressional action after President Donald Trump announced large-scale military operations against Iran without prior authorization from Congress.

In a public statement, Jeffries said the Constitution grants Congress the sole authority to declare war and argued that the administration must seek approval for what he described as a preemptive act of military force. He said the president failed to request congressional authorization before launching the strikes.

Jeffries acknowledged Iran’s record of human rights violations and regional destabilization but said military action requires clear justification and defined objectives. He urged the administration to explain the national security basis for the operation and outline a strategy to avoid prolonged conflict.

The Democratic leader also cited a bipartisan War Powers Resolution introduced by Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., and Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., that would require the removal of U.S. forces from hostilities involving Iran absent congressional authorization. House Democrats, he said, intend to pursue a vote on the measure.

President Trump announced the start of military operations overnight, warning of potential casualties as U.S. forces engage in the region. The Pentagon has not released detailed information on the full scope of the strikes or possible retaliatory actions.

The unfolding debate sets up a constitutional clash over executive war powers as tensions escalate overseas and lawmakers weigh their authority under the War Powers Resolution.

Further updates are expected as Congress returns to session.
