New York, New York — Rain and strong winds are spreading across the New York City region on Friday as a fast-moving system approaches, bringing the potential for heavy downpours and wind gusts reaching up to 55 mph.
According to the National Weather Service in New York, rain began overspreading the area early Friday morning and may fall heavily at times as the system moves through. Forecasters said the rain will be accompanied by strong to locally damaging winds, particularly later in the morning and afternoon hours.
Wind gusts between 40 and 55 mph are expected across the city and surrounding areas, prompting a Wind Advisory that remains in effect through midnight Friday. The strongest gusts may be capable of downing tree limbs, causing isolated power outages, and making travel difficult, especially on bridges and elevated roadways.
Officials urged residents to secure loose outdoor objects, including holiday decorations, trash bins, and patio furniture, to prevent them from becoming airborne. High-profile vehicles may also experience difficulty, particularly during peak wind periods.
Rainfall totals are expected to vary, but brief periods of heavy rain could lead to ponding on roadways and reduced visibility during the Friday commute. While widespread flooding is not anticipated, drivers are advised to slow down and allow extra stopping distance on wet roads.
The National Weather Service noted that conditions should gradually improve late Friday night as the system exits the region, with winds diminishing overnight. Cooler and calmer weather is expected to follow.
Commuters, delivery drivers, and outdoor workers may experience the greatest impacts Friday morning and afternoon as rain and wind overlap.
