NEW YORK, N.Y. – Damp streets and gray skies will greet New Yorkers early this week as a strong cold front pushes through, ushering in the city’s most noticeable chill of the fall season. The steady hum of rain on rooftops Sunday night will give way to crisp, dry air and gusty winds by Veterans Day.

According to the National Weather Service, periods of rain are expected Sunday into Monday, with the heaviest showers before dawn Monday and lingering drizzle possible along the coast. A westward wind shift behind the front will sweep much colder air into the New York–New Jersey metro corridor, dropping temperatures from the mid-50s Monday morning into the 40s by late afternoon. Breezes will strengthen through Tuesday, with gusts topping 25 mph along bridges and near the East River.

Residents planning to attend Veterans Day events Tuesday should dress warmly, as highs will only reach the mid-40s under mostly sunny skies. The brisk air will carry that unmistakable early-winter bite, signaling the seasonal turn that’s already brought first snows to northern states from Maine to Michigan. For now, precipitation stays rain across the Tri-State, but forecasters are watching late November systems that could bring the first flakes north of I-80 before Thanksgiving.

By midweek, sunshine returns and temperatures climb back toward the low 50s — ideal for outdoor cleanup or early holiday decorating before another front slides in next weekend.
