New York State wakes up under a biting winter grip as sharp winds slice through city streets and exposed skin stings within minutes. Breath hangs in the air, sidewalks feel glassy, and the cold settles deep, especially before midday.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect for New York City through mid-morning, with wind chills dropping as low as 6 degrees below zero in parts of the region. Another advisory follows late tonight into Friday morning as Arctic air reloads. The advisory covers Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island.

Temperatures hover in the low teens early, but the wind does the real damage. Gusts near 15 mph strip away warmth fast, raising hypothermia risk for anyone outdoors too long. Transit riders feel it on platforms. Walkers feel it immediately. Drivers should watch for flash freezing where pavement dries and refreezes, especially on bridges and ramps.

Cold eases slightly into Friday, though highs stay stuck in the teens. By Saturday, clouds thicken and cold remains stubborn. Light snow becomes possible Saturday night into Sunday, with blustery conditions reducing visibility at times. Any snow melt during daylight could refreeze after sunset, keeping roads slick.

Beyond the weekend, colder air holds on before a gradual moderation early next week. Lake-effect snow continues downwind of the Great Lakes, a sign of how much ice now covers the water.

Five Day Outlook for New York City:

  • Today: Mostly sunny, high near 22, brutal wind chills early
  • Friday: Sunny and cold, high near 18
  • Saturday: Mostly sunny, high near 20
  • Sunday: Chance of snow, high near 24, blustery
  • Monday: Mostly sunny, high near 32
