Albany, N.Y. – More than 40 counties across New York and New Jersey are under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 10 p.m. Thursday, just hours before Fourth of July celebrations begin. Residents from Albany to the Jersey Shore should brace for wind gusts over 60 mph, isolated hail, and frequent lightning through the evening.
According to the National Weather Service and the Storm Prediction Center, Severe Thunderstorm Watch 484 covers areas including New York City, Long Island, the Hudson Valley, and much of North and Central New Jersey. Fast-moving storms could topple trees, damage power lines, and create hazardous travel conditions on highways including I-87, I-95, and the Garden State Parkway.
In New York, all five boroughs are included, along with counties such as Westchester, Orange, and Suffolk. In New Jersey, Essex, Morris, Union, and Passaic are among those at risk. Officials urge residents to secure outdoor items, monitor weather apps, and avoid unnecessary travel during active warnings.
With large holiday crowds expected across beaches and parks, emergency management agencies are on alert. Anyone outdoors should seek shelter indoors as thunder approaches.
Storms may continue into early Friday. Further alerts are possible as the front moves east overnight.
