New York – Snowfall across the New York City metro and surrounding suburbs is expected to create hazardous travel conditions today, as a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through midnight.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, 3 to 5 inches of snow are forecast across southeast New York, northeast New Jersey, and southern Connecticut. The advisory was extended early Sunday morning and now runs until 12 a.m. EST tonight.

The advisory area includes New York City, Rockland and Westchester counties, Putnam County, northeast New Jersey, southern Nassau County, and portions of Fairfield County, Connecticut. All five New York City boroughs — Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island — are included.

Forecasters note that snowfall rates may fluctuate during the day, with a possible lull in activity during the afternoon before additional snow moves through later today. Despite the lull, untreated roads may remain slick as temperatures stay near freezing.

The National Weather Service warns that slippery road conditions are expected across highways, local streets, bridges, and overpasses, particularly during the evening hours when traffic volume increases. Reduced traction may impact drivers throughout the region.

Travelers are advised to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and use caution, especially during peak commuting periods. Conditions may vary significantly over short distances, especially between urban corridors and elevated or less-treated roadways.

Local Departments of Transportation recommend monitoring road condition updates and adjusting travel plans if possible. While snowfall totals are not expected to reach warning criteria, impacts may still be significant due to population density and traffic volume across the metro area.
