Albany, NY – Eastern New York and western New England continue to experience dry conditions this week, despite recent rainfall that brought temporary relief to some areas.
According to the U.S. National Weather Service Albany, showers in late September helped ease drought impacts across portions of the region, most notably in Saratoga County. However, the latest drought monitor released Thursday shows that much of Vermont, New Hampshire, and western Massachusetts remain in moderate to extreme drought categories.
The National Weather Service reported that dry conditions are expected to persist through early next week. A cold front is forecast to approach by midweek, bringing increased chances of rain across the region. Officials note that while the rain may help reduce short-term dryness, it is unlikely to fully erase ongoing deficits in areas facing more severe drought.
The most severe drought, categorized as “extreme,” continues across northeastern Vermont. Meanwhile, much of eastern New York, including the Capital Region, remains classified as “abnormally dry” to “moderate drought.”
The next drought monitor update will be released on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.
