Boston, Massachusetts – A powerful winter storm is expected to impact large portions of New York and Massachusetts beginning Sunday night, bringing heavy snow, dangerous cold, and periods of ice that could significantly disrupt travel, utilities, and daily routines across the region through early next week.

According to the National Weather Service, snow will overspread much of New York and Massachusetts late Sunday, becoming heavy at times through Monday. Arctic air surging in behind the storm is expected to drive temperatures well below normal, producing hazardous wind chills and increasing the risk of frostbite during overnight hours and early morning commutes.

The greatest travel impacts are expected along major corridors including Interstate 90, Interstate 84, Interstate 87, and Interstate 95, where roads could quickly become snow-covered and icy. Upstate New York and interior Massachusetts face the highest potential for significant snow accumulations, while eastern and coastal sections of Massachusetts and southeastern New York could see periods of sleet or freezing rain, increasing the risk of downed tree limbs and scattered power outages.

Officials urge residents to avoid non-essential travel during periods of heavy snow, prepare vehicles with winter emergency supplies, and ensure heating systems are operating safely. Prolonged cold could strain utilities and increase the risk of frozen pipes.

Winter storm warnings and cold weather advisories are expected to remain in effect through Tuesday, with additional alerts possible as conditions continue to evolve across New York and Massachusetts.
