Rensselaer, N.Y. –New York is enjoying a beautiful summer Monday, but the quiet weather is only the calm before a much more active stretch. Bright sunshine and comfortable morning temperatures are giving way to increasing humidity, and meteorologists are tracking a cold front that will bring multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms beginning Tuesday. If you have outdoor plans, today offers the best opportunity before conditions become much wetter.

According to the National Weather Service in Albany, today remains sunny with a high near 83 degrees before clouds steadily increase tonight. Rain chances quickly ramp up Tuesday afternoon as showers and thunderstorms develop after 2 p.m. The chance of precipitation rises to 60% Tuesday, then increases to 90% Tuesday night as a stronger wave of rain moves across eastern New York.

Drivers should expect changing travel conditions by Tuesday afternoon. Motorists on Interstate 87, Interstate 90, Interstate 787 and U.S. Route 9 could encounter bursts of heavy rain, reduced visibility and ponding water during the afternoon and evening commute. Southwest winds may gust to 29 mph, with stronger gusts possible in thunderstorms. Allow extra travel time and avoid driving through water-covered roadways.

Tuesday’s temperatures top out near 79 degrees, slightly cooler than Monday, before widespread showers spread across the Capital Region. A few thunderstorms may produce gusty winds, frequent lightning and locally heavy rainfall. While widespread severe weather is not specifically forecast, the approaching cold front moving through the Northeast could support isolated stronger storms, making it important to stay weather-aware throughout the day.

Unsettled weather lingers into Wednesday with another 60% chance of showers and highs near 81 degrees. Sunshine returns Thursday with a pleasant high around 79 degrees, followed by warmer weather Friday as temperatures rebound into the middle 80s. Looking farther ahead, longer-range outlooks continue to signal above-normal temperatures developing later next week across the Northeast.

Take advantage of today’s sunshine, but keep an eye on updated forecasts before Tuesday afternoon travel or outdoor activities.
