Albany, NY – Drivers across eastern New York and western Massachusetts should prepare for deteriorating travel conditions Friday evening as a winter storm brings accumulating snow to the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 4 p.m. Friday through 1 p.m. Saturday for much of the Capital Region, Mohawk Valley, Schoharie Valley, northeast Catskills, and Berkshire County, Massachusetts. Forecasters expect 4 to 6 inches of snowfall, enough to significantly impact travel.
The advisory includes communities such as Albany, Schenectady, Troy, Saratoga Springs, Clifton Park, Amsterdam, Gloversville, Johnstown, Cobleskill, Middleburgh, Herkimer, Pittsfield, North Adams, and Great Barrington, among many others across eastern New York and western Massachusetts.
The National Weather Service says snow will develop from west to east around or shortly after sunset Friday, coinciding with the Friday evening commute. Periods of light to moderate snow are expected to continue overnight, with snowfall gradually tapering off Saturday morning.
Roads are expected to become snow-covered and slippery, particularly during the evening and overnight hours. Bridges, overpasses, and untreated surfaces may become hazardous quickly as temperatures remain cold enough for steady accumulation.
Officials urge drivers to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra travel time Friday night. Pedestrians should also use caution on sidewalks and steps as snow accumulates.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and advisories as the system progresses and road conditions evolve into Saturday.
