Elmira, NY – A 36-year-old man from Candor, New York, was arrested this week in Chemung County after authorities said he allegedly stole bags from a park and attempted to flee deputies on foot.

According to the Chemung County Sheriffโ€™s Office, deputies were called to the Erin Park Station on August 10 for a report of a stolen backpack. While investigating, deputies learned a second theft of a duffle bag had also occurred. The case was turned over to the departmentโ€™s Criminal Investigation Division.

Authorities said security cameras later captured the suspect, identified as Thomas J. Mitchell, allegedly taking the bags and leaving the park. On September 3, investigators located Mitchell at an address in Candor with the help of Tioga County deputies. When approached, he reportedly tried to run but was quickly taken into custody without further incident.

Mitchell now faces two counts of grand larceny in the fourth degree, a Class E felony. Deputies said he was arraigned in Chemung County and also has outstanding warrants in Genesee County.

The sheriffโ€™s office said New York State Police, the Tioga County Sheriffโ€™s Office, and a K-9 unit from the Tompkins County Sheriffโ€™s Office assisted in the case.
