Buffalo, NY – A Lake Effect Snow Warning remains in effect for Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties, with travel alerts issued as up to 24 inches of snow is expected by Tuesday evening. Residents should prepare for rapidly changing road conditions and reduced visibility as heavy snow continues to fall.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the heaviest snowfall will occur in narrow bands, with some areas seeing rates of 2 inches per hour. Visibility may drop to less than ¼ mile, making travel on key routes, including Interstate 86 and U.S. Route 62, dangerous. Officials urge drivers to delay non-essential travel and equip vehicles with winter supplies, such as blankets, non-perishable food, and flashlights, in case of emergencies.

The storm, fueled by cold air sweeping over Lake Erie, has already blanketed the region in deep snow. Areas like Jamestown and Olean are experiencing particularly severe conditions, with blowing and drifting snow making secondary roads nearly impassable. Travelers should monitor updates from local authorities and check for possible road closures.

The five-day forecast suggests the storm will taper off by Wednesday, with lighter snow expected later in the week. However, temperatures will remain below freezing, and gusty winds may lead to additional drifting snow through Friday.

For live updates on weather conditions, closures, and emergency alerts, visit local county websites or listen to NOAA Weather Radio. Residents are encouraged to avoid sudden braking on icy roads and to allow extra travel time if driving becomes unavoidable.
