Albany, NY — A significant lake effect snowstorm is set to hit Western New York, bringing up to 16 inches of snow in some areas. The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a Lake Effect Snow Warning for Buffalo, Erie, and Genesee counties from 10 a.m. Monday to 4 a.m. Wednesday. Dangerous travel conditions and extremely low visibility are expected along I-90 and surrounding roadways.
According to the NWS, the heaviest snowfall will occur Monday night through Tuesday, accompanied by 50 mph wind gusts. These conditions may lead to near-zero visibility and snowdrifts, making travel treacherous or impossible. Drivers should avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for rapid changes in weather conditions.
South Buffalo and surrounding towns are likely to experience the brunt of the storm, with accumulations of 8 to 16 inches in the most persistent bands. Wind chills could drop as low as -15°F, increasing the risk of frostbite with prolonged exposure.
The frigid weather is part of a cold air mass moving into the region, keeping highs in the single digits to low teens through midweek. Light snow showers are possible Wednesday, though conditions should improve by Thursday, with temperatures climbing back to the mid-20s.
Residents are urged to stock emergency supplies, keep vehicles winter-ready, and check local advisories for updates. For assistance during extreme cold, visit warming centers or call 211 for resources.
