Syracuse, New York – A dangerous heat wave grips Central New York today, sending heat index values soaring to near 97 degrees from Syracuse to Binghamton and across 11 counties through 8 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, the Heat Advisory covers Broome, Chemung, Madison, Onondaga, Schuyler, Seneca, Southern Cayuga, Southern Oneida, Tioga, Tompkins, and Yates counties. The alert remains in effect from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday, with the highest risk for heat-related illness this afternoon and early evening.
Cities including Elmira, Auburn, Utica, Ithaca, Rome, and Penn Yan are expected to see oppressive humidity and temperatures pushing into the mid-90s, especially on urban streets and unshaded areas. Emergency managers urge residents to avoid strenuous activities outdoors, especially between noon and 6 p.m., and to use public cooling centers where available. School summer programs and outdoor workers should take extra breaks, wear light clothing, and watch for signs of heat exhaustion such as dizziness and rapid pulse.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends frequent rest in shade and rapid action if symptoms of heat stroke appear. Vulnerable populations—children, seniors, and those without air conditioning—face increased risk. Check on neighbors, drink water regularly, and stay indoors if possible.
The heat threat will ease tonight as temperatures dip, but additional advisories are possible later this week if high temperatures persist.
