Binghamton, N.Y. – Gardeners and growers across central New York and northeast Pennsylvania should prepare for frost damage early Tuesday, as temperatures dip to near freezing before sunrise.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Frost Advisory is in effect from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. Tuesday for a wide swath of the region, including Oneida, Broome, Tioga, Steuben, Chemung, and Otsego counties in New York, along with Bradford, Susquehanna, and Wayne counties in Pennsylvania. Overnight lows could fall to 32°F in many rural and low-lying areas.
The cold spell could damage or kill sensitive outdoor plants, especially early vegetables, flowers, and fruit tree blossoms. Residents are urged to cover gardens, bring potted plants indoors, or use frost cloths to prevent losses.
Urban areas like Syracuse and Binghamton may stay just above freezing, but surrounding valleys and farmland are at higher risk. This type of late-spring frost isn’t unusual for the region, but the timing could impact newly planted crops and backyard gardens.
Temperatures are expected to rebound by mid-morning Tuesday, but more advisories may be issued if chilly conditions linger.
