Binghamton, NY – A weather system is bringing significant risks to upstate New York, with freezing rain expected late Friday into Saturday morning. Roads like I-81 could become hazardous as untreated surfaces may develop an icy glaze.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, patchy freezing rain will begin after midnight Friday and intensify into early Saturday morning. Travelers are urged to prepare for slippery conditions and allow extra time if heading out during these hours. Highs on Friday will hover in the upper 30s, but lows will drop near freezing, creating ideal conditions for ice formation.
On Saturday, the freezing rain will transition into rain as temperatures rise into the mid-40s. However, the rain could cause localized flooding by Sunday as heavy showers continue, especially in low-lying areas and near streams. The National Weather Service predicts up to 90% precipitation on Sunday, with some areas seeing over an inch of rainfall.
The system will persist into Monday, bringing additional rainfall and maintaining flood risks across the region. Cooler weather will return by New Year’s Day, with scattered showers expected.
Local officials recommend checking weather updates before traveling and keeping emergency supplies in vehicles, including ice scrapers, blankets, and flashlights. Residents should monitor local advisories and avoid unnecessary travel during the most dangerous periods.
