Albany, NY – Hazardous weather conditions are impacting the Albany area as freezing rain and icy roads continue through Saturday afternoon. Travelers are urged to use caution, as untreated surfaces and bridges could become dangerously slick.

According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 1 p.m. Saturday. Light freezing rain began overnight, with temperatures hovering near 26°F. A slight warm-up later Saturday could bring mixed precipitation or rain, reducing ice buildup but creating patchy fog.

Drivers should avoid non-essential travel, particularly on major roads like Interstate 87 and Route 9. If you must drive, ensure your vehicle is equipped with winter tires and keep an emergency kit handy. Pedestrians should wear rubber-soled footwear to prevent slips on icy sidewalks.

The forecast shows improvement later in the day as temperatures rise to near 40°F, bringing a chance of rain and patchy fog. Sunday is expected to remain mild but unsettled, with highs near 48°F and consistent rainfall by midday. Gusty winds could develop, reaching speeds of up to 24 mph.

Looking ahead to the New Year’s Day week, Monday and Tuesday will bring drier conditions. Monday’s high will reach 56°F with possible morning rain. By Tuesday, partly sunny skies are forecast, with highs near 47°F—a welcome break after a wet weekend.

Residents should stay updated through weather.gov and local alerts for changes in conditions. Winter safety tips, including salting walkways and taking short steps outdoors, remain essential until the icy weather subsides.
