Buffalo, NY – A Flood Watch remains in effect for western and north-central New York from Tuesday afternoon through Thursday afternoon due to rapid snowmelt and rainfall, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Buffalo.
The NWS reports that an intense storm system moving through the Great Lakes will bring unseasonably warm temperatures, reaching the 50s, along with a half to three-quarters of an inch of rain. These conditions are expected to accelerate snowmelt, leading to significant rises in rivers, creeks, and streams, increasing the risk of flooding, particularly in areas prone to ice jams.
The affected areas include Niagara, Orleans, Monroe, Wayne, Northern Cayuga, Oswego, Jefferson, Lewis, Northern Erie, Genesee, Wyoming, Livingston, Ontario, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Allegany, and Southern Erie counties. Cities at risk include Buffalo, Rochester, and Niagara Falls.
Officials warn that excessive runoff could result in flooded roadways and low-lying areas. Residents are urged to remain alert and prepared for possible Flood Warnings. Those living near waterways should monitor conditions closely and take precautions in case of rising water levels.
