Buffalo, N.Y. – Multiple flash flood warnings remain in effect across western New York this evening as severe thunderstorms continue dumping heavy rain on already saturated ground, prompting hazardous travel conditions in several counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, over 5 inches of rain have fallen in parts of Livingston and Ontario counties as of 5:30 p.m. Friday. Additional rainfall between 0.5 to 1 inch is expected, with flash flooding ongoing or imminent in low-lying areas, creeks, and roadways.
In Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties, flooding has already been reported near Salamanca, Allegany State Park, and Frewsburg. To the northeast, Geneseo, Honeoye, and Mount Morris are facing rising waters, particularly near Letchworth State Park. Urban flooding and road washouts are also possible in Perry, Attica, and Warsaw, where multiple creeks are near capacity.
Drivers are urged to avoid water-covered roads, especially along Routes 19, 36, and 63. “Turn around, don’t drown” remains the critical message, as most flood fatalities occur in vehicles. Campers and hikers are also advised to stay away from streams and flood-prone trails this evening.
Flash flood warnings are set to expire between 7:45 and 9:45 p.m., but more alerts could follow if rainfall persists.
